Have you been to any of these film & TV locations in the Yorkshire Dales? Any others you've spotted? Channel 5's version of All Creatures Great and Small is filmed in and around Grassington (Darrowby), with scenes in Arncliffe in Littondale and on the Broughton Sanctuary (Broughton Hall Estate), Kettlewell and around Malhamdale and at Yockenthwaite Farm (home of the best granola you'll ever eat).
The original (and best?) version was filmed in Swaledale, Arkengarthdale and Wensleydale. Langthwaite was featured in the opening credits of the first Herriot series. Follow the road to Low Row and you'll come across the iconic water splash too, a shallow ford through which James Herriot drives. Askrigg was used as Darrowby.
Arncliffe was also used as the setting for the early Emmerdale TV series. More recently, Malhamdale has featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when Hermione and Harry camped on the top of Malham Cove. Other scenes features Malham village and Kirkby Malham.
Kettlewell was made famous by the Calendar Girls, which is actually based on the true story of members of the Women's Institute posing naked for a fundraising calendar.
It's now quite a while since Kevin Costner ended up in the river by Aysgarth Falls after battling with Little John in the film version of Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. Marian also spots Robin bathing at Hardraw Force.
Lad: A Yorkshire Story isn't so well known but is well worth looking out for. It's a heart-warming film that anyone who loves the Yorkshire Dales will enjoy - the story of a young boy whose future seems uncertain until he develops a friendship with a National Park ranger and starts to appreciate the Dales and spending time outdoors. It features much of the Dales landscapes. You can meet the star of that film, Bretton Lord near Ingleton where he now runs the brilliant Lords Antiques & Salvage!
