Foodie treats in Malton

Susan Briggs· 3 minutes
Where can you find a Yorkshire Pudding Recipe written large on the side of a building, amazing food experiences, and markets, in a lovely green setting? Where cheese meets jazz, and where you can find an award-winning macaron-maker alongside blacksmiths and bookshops, Georgian frontages and cobbled courtyards - and a huge Pink Cow?

Visit Malton - Yorkshires Food Capital to discover all these. It's known for its food festivals (think a tiny Glastonbury for the taste buds) and regular markets full of tasty temptations, but is now also a place to go to be creative, to learn something new or buy crafts and food from talented artisan makers. I love to browse and buy an armful of books from Kemps General Store, one of many independent shops with a lovely atmosphere.

It's easy to wander around Malton's compact centre. A few ideas:
- Look out for the sculpture trail and Nathan Boden’s special new signpost in Green Man’s Alley, luring visitors into Talbot Yard.
- See work by local artists and makers at The Gallery Malton, Environmental art blacksmiths, and wonderful wood at The Woodlark
- Join a guided gastronomic tour to meet some of the best producers and go behind the scenes, tasting treats along the way
- Learn how to make your own gin at the Rare Bird Distillery school
- Challenge yourself – exactly how many of these foodie treats can you enjoy in a day or weekend? Discover the delights of Florian Poirot’s macarons (masterclasses available), the Pantry, Bluebird Bakery’s real bread, delicious The Groovy Moo Groovy Moo’s gelato, beer from Brass Castle Brewery, the Patisserie Malton, and cheese from The Deli Of Malton and The Walled Garden Pantry, find the secret door to the speakeasy at McMillans of Malton, vegetarian treats at the Purple Carrot and freshly roasted coffee from Roost Coffee.

You might want to enjoy some of these on a picnic along the riverside walk to Orchard Fields, site of a Roman legionary camp and fort, where you can still see some of the groundworks here today. The Cooks Place Malton runs intriguing and fun events and cookery classes. The Wesley Centre, Malton is an iconic landmark offering a great event space and other community services. Malton continues to evolve. It’s at the forefront of the circular economy, putting sustainability at the heart of all activity - see the latest developments at Circular Malton's hub on Wheelgate.
