Nappa Hall

Stories of the Past·Susan Briggs· 1 minute
If there was ever a house to inspire a fairy story or spooky tale, surely this is it. Any guesses where it is? If you've driven from Askrigg to Carperby in Wensleydale, you may have passed it without noticing as it's hidden from the road. Nappa Hall is a special building with two towers, described by described by English Heritage as "probably the finest and least-spoilt fortified manor house in the north of England".

It was built in 1459 by James Metcalfe at a time when the area was frequently raided by the Scots, was added to and remained in the hands of the prominent Metcalfe family (some call it more of a local 'clan') for some time. It's said that Mary Queen of Scots visited there, with stories of her ghost still lurking.
The odd name of Nappa may come from 'nab', meaning a piece of land which juts out from the surrounding landscape.

The house is privately owned so you can't go inside, but there is a footpath from the road to Nappa Mill, going past the hall or you can peer at it from the road before leaves cover the view.
