Fords to a gentle adventure

Yorkshire Dales·Susan Briggs· 1 minute
Fords like this one near Masham can seen quite magical: there's a sense of adventure and slight jeopardy crossing the river, not entirely knowing (despite the measure) how deep it is.

Add to that the idea that most fords around Yorkshire are ancient, previously essential routes for settlements and frequent battle sites. Some of the cobbles under fords date back as far as Roman times. Perhaps predictably, place names ending in 'ford' tell of their importance.

Now there are only about 2000 left in Britain, with quite a few to be found in North Yorkshire. When you unexpectedly happen upon one, it sometimes feels like you've gone back in time, finding your way through almost unexplored territory. A little like being in a fairy story for a few moments, ready to make a daring rescue... or maybe that's just me?!

Do you have a favourite ford? Maybe somewhere you can only cross for some parts of the year?
