Several streets end with -gate (Old norse - gata = road or way), showing Viking influence. Helmsley's sandstone buildings are topped with pantiles: these clay roofing materials are a distinctive feature of the area.
Nowadays, it's a wonderfully relaxing market town in which to wander. Hard to imagine the days when Helmsley Castle played a significant role in the English Civil War, enduring a 3-month siege.
Helmsley is the perfect starting point to explore North York Moors National Park. The 109-mile Cleveland Way starts here, or you could take a gentler walk to Rievaulx Abbey in its stunning setting. It's easy to refuel with plenty of treats for sale in and near the Market Place, especially at Hunters of Helmsley, an attractive and well-stocked deli. Helmsley has several excellent restaurants and cafes, including the beautiful The Vinehouse Cafe, next to the lovely and therapeutic Helmsley Walled Garden. I always enjoy treats at Porters Coffee Shop or Mannions.
Helmsley Open Air Swimming Pool ls a strong draw in its lush green setting, maintained by committed volunteers. National Centre for Birds of Prey offers a fascinating insight into these incredible creatures, as well as running a strong conservation programme. Helmsley Arts Centre has a very friendly feel, with a very varied entertainment programme and exhibitions. Helmsley has a very strong sense of community and there's always something going on.
