Windsor of the North

Outdoors & Landscapes·Susan Briggs· 1 minute
Get an insider's view of "Windsor of the North" with a peek inside the racing stables in Middleham. Richard III came to Middleham to learn the skills of knighthood, and even now there's something a little stately about Middleham.
From the castle walk a little way up the hill to see the gallops, the area on the moor where race-horses are exercised and trained. If you come early in the morning, it's a particularly imposing sight to watch the horses galloping on the misty moor and then clip clopping down the hill to their respective stables.

Middleham has around 15 racehorse trainers and stables and I think it's home to over 500 horses. The town’s racing industry continues to thrive with 400 plus winners having been trained there each year for the past 38 years.

Look out for details of the Open Stables event around Easter each year. This year it's on Good Friday, when visitors have a chance to see behind the scenes in some of the most prominent racing stables, watch displays on the gallops, visit trade stands in the market place, and soak up the atmosphere of beautiful Middleham.
