The Yorkshire/Teesside 'Matterhorn' (Roseberry Topping) makes for a short but challenging clamber, rewarded by panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and North York Moors National Park. The National Park and Roseberry Topping (National Trust) have invested heavily in improving the footpaths. It's a mammoth job involving helicopters, huge supplies of materials and many skilled people. There are several walking routes up to the summit and around Roseberry Topping but erosion can be a problem so pls keep to the paths.
At over 1000 ft tall, it's classed as a mountain but doesn't take long to climb. Part of its distinctive shape was caused by a 1912 mining collapse. Roseberry Topping is a little like a local geological layer cake, formed by Staithes Sandstone at the base, with a layer of Cleveland Ironstone, Whitby Mudstone (with a little jet), topped by Saltwick Sandstone
