Walk through 9 centuries of history along Yorkshire's most stunning heritage coastline: the Cleveland Way is a 109 mile route through really varied landscapes. It's easy to walk shorter sections on the coast, such as between Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay, with good bus routes for the return journey.
The route stretches from Helmsley to Filey Brigg, across the heather moorland of the North York Moors National Park. At Saltburn-by-the-Sea the trail starts to hug the coastline, with some incredible views. You could also make a short detour or stop off to enjoy a visit en route to Helmsley Castle, Rievaulx Abbey or Whitby Abbey. Learn more about the North York Moors National Park at Sutton Bank National Park Centre. The route continues via Osmotherley and Great Ayton on to the coast.
You need to be reasonably fit to walk the route but it's also easy to enjoy shorter sections and circular walks off the main route. It's well-signed with good condition footpaths. Most people walk from Helmsley to Filey Brigg rather than in reverse so the wind is behind you, but you could easily follow the route in the other direction, ending in Helmsley for a celebratory meal!
